Mathusalos (singular Mathusal) are Men that do not possess the potential to use magic.

Mathusal means "Natural" (Mathusalos is the plural, "Naturals") in Noralar.

History

Upon Man's creation on Jevreth, all Men could be considered Mathusalos. However, it was not until 465 MA (when the the gift of magic had entered the world of Men) that the title of Mathusalos would be used to refer to Men without the gift of magic.

However, not all Men would be tested for magical potential, and in fact not all Men with magical potential would learn or experience the use of their dormant powers at all. Because of this, there are and have been Men in Althas that have incorrectly been given the Mathusalos label.

Terminology

This terminology is distinct: those who possess the ability to learn magic, whether they choose to learn how to use it or not, may be classified as najiros or jevrethor. Although jevrethor are fairly distinct from the average Man, due to their unique eye colors, it is not always obvious if someone is a mathusal or a naji. Because of this, a Man may think of himself/herself as a mathusal (when he/she is really a naji, but is simply not aware of it) and vice versa.

Althas

In Althas society, because of the hatred towards najiros, the title of mathusal is preferred amongst the peoples of various factions in Althas (such as the kingdom of Lambitelor). The number of mislabeled mathusalos would often be even higher in these places.
