The following is a list of various clans from throughout Althas's history, as well as explaining their heirarchy.
Hierarchy
The Clans have developed a heirarchy of power, mostly around war and combat.
Helm
The Chief of the Clan. The Helm leads in political affairs, but also oftentimes in the thick of battle.
Ord
The "right hand" (or second in the hierarchy) to the Helm. The Ord commands raiders, plans invasions and directs field deployment.
Ord means "point of a sword", "chief", "vanguard" in Old Maelan.
Scield
The "left hand" (or third in the hierarchy) to the Helm. The Scield directs the construction and maintenance of fortifications, directs defenses, and councils in matters of diplomacy.
Scield means "shield", "protection", "protector" in Old Maelan.
The Sómstrynd Clans
The Sómstrynd Clans are an alliance of clans originating from the Lamniemalos and Narthendar regions of Althas.
Sómstrynd is a combination of sóm ("concord") and strynd ("kin") in Old Maelan.
Clan Alliance
In the decades following The War of Calamities, the Lamniemalos region was largely in chaos outside of the city of Léomael. In 33 RK, four major clans - three from the north and one from the south - came together to form an alliance to protect themselves from the turmoil. This alliance was called The Sómstrynd, or "concord of kin." Collectively, these four clans - Holnas, Wulfas, Hafecas, and Beran - are known as The Sómstrynd Clans.
The chief clan within this alliance is Holnas, a clan that was from the southern region of Lamniemalos. However, although Clan Holnas acts as the head clan among the four, each clan still has their own Helm, who is essentially the chief of the clan. The line of succession for a chief is usually through an esteemed family line.
After forging their alliance, the Sómstrynd moved into the Vishevall mountains and set themselves up in the various fortresses along the range. Hafecas was already native to this region, with their headquarters at Heábold ("high castle" in Old Maelan). Clan Holnas took Holenburg ("holly fort" in Old Maelan), Wulfas took Faesten ("stronghold" in Old Maelan), and Beran took Mórsael ("mountain fort" in Old Maelan) and Ísmúr ("ice wall" in Old Maelan).
The alliance makes much of its wealth through trade in precious metals as well as practical metals like iron. Slavery is also a revenue stream for the Sómstrynd, but Clan Hafecas has not always supported this aspect of their trade.
